The Polarity of Opposites

Being able to skillfully hold the polarity of opposites

And cultivate a state of equanimity

Is the step along the spiritual path

That can bring us to a state of humility and grace.

You can savor the preciousness of this present moment,

And still ache for that which is lost.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

You can appreciate the love you have in your life,

And still long for loved ones who have passed.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

You can love someone completely,

And still know that you cannot have them in your life.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

You can acknowledge and accept what is,

And still work toward a different future.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

You can want to do whatever you want,

And still make choices that honor you.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

You can acknowledge and honor happiness and joy,

And still feel deeply sad and lost.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

You can accept who you are now in this moment,

And still be dedicated to bettering yourself.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

You can appreciate the radiant ease of the light,

And still appreciate the deep richness that the darkness brings.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

You can disagree with the words or actions of another

And still appreciate that they have had their own

unique life experiences that brought them to this place.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

All of life is deeply complex and multi-faceted,

And there are shades of grey to everything,

And subtle details that we can never know.

Being able to skillfully hold the polarity of opposites

And cultivate a state of equanimity

Is the step along the spiritual path

That can bring us to a state of humility and grace.
